Process Inc's Introduction to the CMMI v1.2
November 24-27, 2008 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
The SEI’s Software CMM (SW-CMM®) and CMMI® have been the most successful models for process improvement in the software and systems industries. They have been used by a wide variety of organizations to realize significant improvements in predictability, speed-to-market, cost reduction and product quality. Come learn about the CMMI and how to use it.
Course Overview
This three-and-a-half day course introduces the fundamental concepts of the Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®) and how to introduce it into an organization. CMMI models are tools that help organizations improve their ability to develop and maintain quality products and services. CMMI models are an integration of best practices from proven discipline-specific process improvement models, including the CMM® for Software, EIA 731, and the Integrated Product Development CMM.
The course provides an overview of the CMMI in the context of applying it to real problems in an organization. It then focuses in more detail on Maturity Levels 2 and 3, since these are most relevant to the majority of organizations. There is a module dedicated to how to successfully pursue a CMMI-based process improvement program, as well as one discussing the changes between v1.1 and the recently released v1.2 of the model.
The course is composed of lectures, class exercises and after-class readings, with ample opportunity for participant questions and discussions. After attending the course, participants will be able to describe the components of CMMI models and their relationships, discuss the process areas in CMMI models, and be able to start planning how to use the models in their organization.
Course topics include:
- Introduction,
- What is CMMI,
- Maturity Levels 2, 3, 4 & 5,
- Institutionalization,
- Mastering Process Improvement,
- Structure of the continuous and staged representations, and
- Changes from CMMI v1.1 to v1.2.
Learning Objectives - At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Navigate the CMMI document to find relevant information
- Convey and use the principles behind developmental improvement
- Map CMMI practices into the organizational problems they solve
- Convey CMMI costs and benefits, to "sell" the approach to colleagues
- Use a risk-appropriate approach to developing practices and processes, to avoid bureaucracy.
SEI's Introduction to the CMMI
Process Inc also offers the SEI's Introduction to the CMMI several times a year,
to support people who need it to be part of an imminent SCAMPI appraisal team,
those who are interested in the quantitative processes so important at
the higher maturity levels, or those who wish to go on to become authorized CMMI Instructors
or SCAMPI appraisal/team leaders. Please call about having this course offered in-house, or
add your name to our course announcement list.
Who Should Attend
